English at university

Actually i haven’t learned pretty much English at university, so I can’t make a lot of comments, the blogs were a new thing for me, because I never had the necessity of doing one, so I just write in this one, I like some of the themes that I had to write about, but I don’t like being forced to write all the blogs.
I think that I just need to practice talking with another person, just to be more fluent, the only way to improve this is talking with someone that talks very good English, or to take a paid English class and honestly I don’t really like that idea.
Outside of the English class I use a lot English, pretty often I watch TV series in English  because they are easier to find online and to download, and also because I don’t like the voices that they put in the characters, and I like to translate the lyrics of the songs to understand what I’m hearing and just to kill time and now I can’t do that because I translate the lyrics directly in my head, so I would just be writing them, and where is the challenge in that?.... so I don’t do that anymore, also when I have time I talk with people around the world, just when I have time and now that’s basically never but I really enjoy to talk with people, because they are usually funny and since almost all the time you talk with them just once they are pretty honest and they don’t care so they have no filter and they don’t try to not freak you out, they just shoot what they have in mind , and it’s actually super funny.

Here you have a picture of a puppy for no reason at all.

changes to my study progamme...

In the first place i would like to change the academy charge that we have, i would actually reduce it a Little bit, because we have a lot of pressure, pretty often the teachers thinks that we just have only their class and nothing else, other thing I would like to change is the length of the studies, you spend way too many time studying, and when you got out you are not exactly young and if you want to apply for a job, sometimes they ask for experience, and how am I supposed to have experience if almost every job ask for experience and I just got out…. I really don’t get it.

Well anyway I would also like to change some aspects of the faculty facilities, like installing more green areas, to make all the ambient a little more tolerable in summer, I would like to implement more technology in the classes and it would be really more comfortable bringing just my laptop than carrying tons of books and papers.

In respect of the teaching methods I would like to make the practical classes in parallel to the theoretical classes, so you can really understand what you are studying, and I would like to have a few more practical classes, since you will have to work on laboratories, you should have to spend more time in it, personally I would like to have more clinical classes, but that I can accomplish it with the CFE’s (that are elective classes), so I shouldn’t have troubles with that.

Summer Vacations

National Park Conguillio.
Even when I don’t finish my academic year yet, I already have planned my vacations, by going camping to the national park Conguillio,  I will spend like a week there with two of my sisters and a cousin, and since any signal doesn’t reach there I will be totally disconnected, I will go to the Llaima volcano and to the lake that is there, and after going to the park I want to go to my aunt’s house that is near there, well actually not that near, but close, she lives in Valdivia, and I love to go there.

Las Docas Beach.
And obviously I want to visit more places like the national park Tantauco that is absolutely beautiful, or perhaps go to a beach near Valparaiso named “Las Docas” that is quite similar to any Caribbean beach, it’s a little difficult to get there but it’s totally worth the effort, you can also camp there , and make fireplaces and the landscapes are beautiful, I went there once with my family but just for the day because we didn’t know that you could camp there, but  now that we know and we have everything to camp, we can stay there.
National Park Tantauco.
In this vacations I just want to sleep, eat, take my dog for an occasional walk, travel a little bit, watch my favorites TV series and read a lot, specially the books that belongs to sagas, because I can’t stand not knowing the end of a book, I think I might have a problem with the closure of stories, because I really can’t read or watch a TV show without finishing it and I don’t know if it is a good or bad thing, well  it’s not such a big deal, and I might work in the summer too, I get really bored if I’m not busy, and what better way to get busy than work, well at least I can make money out of it.

Addictions

Everyone has knowledge about drugs of abuse, for several reasons, some knows because they have someone they know that it’s affected, or they consume, or they study the drugs, anyways everyone knows about them even a little bit, and I’m not the exception, honestly I haven’t tried drugs, because I don’t want to, I really think that is a way to avoid problems, and sometimes If you get heavily addicted to any drug or addicted for a long time, you can lose everything, your family, your house, your job, you can also (depending on the drug) end up with sequels on the nervous system, and every time you will need a bigger dose, but not everyone it’s the same and I’m not saying that everyone will pass for the same problems or they will end up with nothing, because not everyone will instantly become an addicted, and not every drug will have the same repercussions on your life, but if you have a problem you should face it, end it, it can be solved easily if you stop avoiding it, also for some people drugs  it’s a way to relax, and to even tolerate what they are passing through that moment, so actually I’m not really against drugs.

Even when I don’t consume drugs I am certainly familiar with some of them, like the nicotine, I’m very familiar with it, the nicotine in the brain can replace a neurotransmitter and produce an abundant release of dopamine, that makes this drugs one of the most consumed and it’s actually legal so it’s easy to get, but the longer you consume it you will need a stronger doses each time to make the same effect.

My mom used to be addicted to it when I was little, she used to smoke 2 packs of cigar in one day, I’m used to the smoke of the cigars now, but in that time I hated it, I don’t even know how she managed her time to smoke that many cigars, now she doesn’t smoke anymore, but she used to have nervous tics when she tried to quit it, and she used to cough a lot.

Well now you are questioning yourself…. where is that related to this girl?... well it’s actually pretty related, at least in some parts with my career, I can actually make experiments with drugs, and see how the drugs affects the well-being of the subject or how does the drug impacts in a cellular level, and it’s a pretty interesting subject.

In general everyone it's addicted to something, whatever it is, music, tv shows, food, drugs, alcohol, money, sex, shopping, etc..., so i give you a little advice, just enjoy your life.

Post-graduate studies

Since I started to think in universities, careers and stuff like, I also thought about PhD’s, masters, I couldn’t think of one career without a post-graduate study, I honestly think that without a PhD or a master degree, it would be difficult to find a job, and I want to specialize in clinical or toxicological biochemistry,  i would love to learn and work with diseases, but I’m just in freshmen year, so I still have plenty of time to decide in what I should specialize, or I can even change my mind about it.
I would like to make a master and also a PhD here, but make an internship abroad, because usually, in USA or some countries of Europe (Germany, France, Netherlands, UK, those are the ones that I would prefer to do it, but if I get an scholarship to do it in another country I would totally accept it) they have better implements and you have more opportunities to get a job, with the experience to make an internship abroad than one made here in Chile.
I honestly think that the distance learning program would definitely not work on me, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate, I really prefer the part-time course, because you have time to do things besides studying.

I also love the fact that if I make a PhD I can be called doctor, and I would love to be correct people, and say “No, no, actually it’s Doctor Paloma Navarrete”, like Sheldon Cooper says in the TV show the big bang theory.

My future job...

Honestly I have a lot of backup plans, just in case something doesn’t work out as I imagined, I can still work in something different, but my principal plan is to work in a lab, since I’m studying biochemistry , I would have to make  experiments, analyze things, and stuff like that, sadly I can’t work outdoors, because to make the experiments  sometimes you have to make certain conditions, i love to work outdoors, if I can work in something else to not work in an office I would totally do it , especially if I have to travel a lot, but I would have to choose between to different jobs, and that’s not the idea, they would be totally opposite for example one of my many backup plans is to be a tourist guide, because it’s easy to do it and simple, you don’t have to study a lot to do it, and I can manage very good a group and I have the possibility to travel a lot.

I would totally travel a lot for work, going to conferences and seminars, and stuff like that, just to travel, but everything in a moderated way, because if you travel a lot you won’t have enough time to do the research, and it will be so messy.

Honestly I don’t really care about how much they pay me as long as I’m happy and I can afford enough to live properly, not in fancy way but in a comfortable way, actually i didn't even considered that when i chose my career, that is biochemistry, and i'm not really clear about i want to specialize but it is mostly to the part of clinical research, work with diseases, because i want to help people, but not in a direct way, and to help a lot of people at the same time, and i have always been interested in how the diseases work, how they develop and how can you end it, and i want to have a PhD, because it's easier to get a job if you got one.

And i would like to work in europe or U.S,A, because they have the most advanced technology to do research, and if i work in europe, i would have the chance to travel in the weekends, since all is connected it would be easier to travel in my free time.

Digressing about music...

I think that my favorite type of music it's rock and genres similar to it, like post-hardcore, pop punk, well in general music with energetic and powerful voices, and true instrumental background, like the classical rock, i really prefer the sound of a good solo guitar or drums than the studio sounds like electronic music, but i'm not saying that it's not good for certain occasions.
I don't have like only one favorite band or singer, because it's so hard to choose between them, because they are so good, well one of the bands i like the most it's Panic! At The Disco, i just simply love the sound of the voice of Brendon Urie, he can reach super high notes, and some of the songs have silly lyrics, and he has a lot of energy and power in every aspect.

Other group i like a lot it's AC/DC, because of course who can possibly resist to the voice of Brian Johnson, and those guitars, another group it's Aerosmith, i really like the lyrics of their songs, the voice of Steven Tyler it's so peaceful, well at least for me, i usually hear it when i want to relax, it's very good to think about anything, and finally Simple Plan, i really enjoy their songs, some of them have super silly lyrics, and videos, i hear them when i'm super happy, because they are very cheerful.

And i bet that everyone have listened to music that now you don't like or you're ashamed of that because you think what the hell was i thinking when i heard that, and in my case it was Belinda, it heard her songs all day and maybe because of that i don't like it anymore.
A song that i would probably never forget it's i don't wanna miss a thing from Aerosmith, because the first time i heard it was when i watched the movie armageddon and i fell in love with that song, it's one of my favorite songs.

And also the song The Rains of Castamere, that is part of the soundtrack of Game of Thrones, in the red wedding, i would totally use that song in my wedding if i ever get married, it would be super funny, because all the game of thrones fans would freak out when the songs start to play.

The most amazing organ that we have...

I think that the most amazing organ that we have it's the brain, because it completes so many functions, coordinates everything, all at once, it doesn't take any breaks, because we would  die if it does. It's the most precious cargo that we have, it contains all the information that we have, how to react, how to speak, how the things around looks like, how to arrive to a specific place, how to communicate, analyze, think, imagine things, it even transforms the information of the things around you into images, with the help of your eyes of course, the sound waves into something that you can understand, it can transform a familiar sensation into excitement or sadness or anything else, it receives thousands of stimulation of the things that surrounds you, it's so amazing that 1200 cm3 approximately, can coordinate all that at the same time, and it's just in your head, it's so exposed to everything, you let it without oxygen for 8 seconds and it dies, you catch a cold, and if you got high temperature, you can have severe consequences, you hit your head too strong and you can either die or got into a coma or stay in vegetative state, and a lot more things can damage it. But you can take care of it or develop the potential that it has hidden, like for example if you want to draw, you can practice and your brain will remember how to draw the lines so it can form an image at the end, or what color can you mix to paint something or how to play an instrument, all that you can learn it, and you brain will remember it forever, like memories and sensations, and one of the sensations i love to remember are the ones produced by music, because with every tune you got different sensations, it also has the possibility to trigger memories you didn't remember that you even had.
It seems a bit odd that something so important it's so fragile, so exposed, well but there is nothing that we can do about it so we will just have to accept it.

My best holydays ever...

I think that my best holiday so far, was like two or three years ago, when i went to Valdivia, with my sisters, to spend the summer in my aunt house, it lasted like three weeks or four weeks, we were six teenagers in that house and my aunt but she worked almost all day so we didn't share pretty much time with her and we were practically on our own,  we had to do all the stuff, we used to cook mostly french fries, donuts, sandwiches, and things like that, it was basically like we didn't have any parents or someone watching over us, so it was like living with a group of friends, no restrictions, no orders, we went to a significant number of places and we did a lot of things that year, like when i went to the Saval park i got into a specie of a giant hamster ball, and my cousin and sisters did too, we were just bouncing at each other but it was really fun, also we went to the botanic garden, here we just wondered around just watching at the trees, the beautiful landscapes, los molinos beach where we kayaked, also the torreón los canelos, and a lot more , i think it was the best one for me at least, because i had no restrictions, i was basically by my own, so i was practically free, and i love to be independent, i hate the strings of living with your parents, it's not that i have a lot of restrictions from them, is just that i love the sensation of being on your own.

Parque botánico.
I keep really good memories of those holidays....
